I Was asked today to setup 3 plasma screens, so that our client in Skipton, North Yorkshire

could put one powerpoint presentation on all 3 screens.

Besides having setup many Microsoft Media Centre’s I do not

consider myself an AV Specialist, so my initial plan was to simply run either an SVideo cable or Vga cable with a splitter box.

I was then told that the PC needed to be on a different floor from the TV’s!!

The obvious answer was to make use

of the the cat 5 network points that were already cabled in and running between both floors.

So after googling, I found

Its really simple to setup

and now we have 3 Plasma screens connected to one pc via Cat 5 Network cables.

So to Sum up we needed

• Startech VGA & AUDIO Over CAT 5 – Video Extender

  Upto 150m

• 3 VGA Cables and 3 network cables

After mounting the CD, XP installation starts booting but then:

Its been while

since we have seen this error as XP handles most drive controllers. Its a 5 min proccess to continue:

• Create a new Windows XP

  Virtual Machine

• Mount your  Windows XP .iso on the virtual CD Rom
• download & use a

  preconfigured .flp file from the VMware site:

• Link the .flp

  file via the floppy options. 

• Power O XP. The installation of Windows XP should begin.
• During

  setup, press F6 to select additional drivers

• Press “S” during Windows Setup when prompted to

  connect to the floppy drive

• The LSI

  Logic Drive Should now appear

• ALL DONE!!

Schedule

an eject, the job starts running (or initialising). A few minutes later the Job Status changes from “Running” to “Communication Stalled”. Then after 15

minutes the job fails. The same happens when trying to run an inventory.

The solution is as follows:

Go to the Devices tab and right-click on

the media server. Choose the pause option and leave it paused for a few seconds. Then un-pause it. Next re-start the Backup Exec services. Once the services

have re-started, you should have no trouble running the utility operations.

This Morning I did a routine restart of

my Microsoft Vista Ultimate machine. When the Machine came back up, I had some sort of temporary profile. No personalised settings, but worst of all my

Outlook was no longer configured to use RPC over HTTP. Noooooooo.

After leaving it for a few hours, I hoped that magically it had sorted itself out.

Wishfull thinking! Self healing PC’s are still at least 2 decades away!

After the restart found I was not able to login at all.

I

got this error: “The user profile service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded”.
Event Viewer Showed:

Windows

cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check that you are connected to the network, and that your network is functioning

correctly.

DETAIL – Access is denied.

After going through the Microsoft MSDN Library, I found

SOLUTION:

Locate the following, using REGEDIT.  (You may need to login via safe

mode)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

There was 1 line for each profile.

Check the following:
a) Ensure the key name doesn’t end in “.bad” or .Bak
b) Ensure the RefCount value is 0
c) Ensure the State value is

0

After I removed the “.bak” from the profile, it worked perfectly, and I’m now back up and running with all settings intact. Including

Outlook!!

The client says that certain icons need to appear on all users desktop on his Windows

2003 server, you say no problem. You quickly navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop and paste the icons. Nice and easy.

style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">The client later asks you to do the same thing, but on his 2008

server. Again you say no problem and quickly open up the same location. But wait, it isn’t there! So you remember that user documents are located under

C:\Users (not Documents and Settings anymore!!). But there is still no “all users”. You choose to show hidden folders, but still no luck. One step further

and you choose not to hide protected system files. Aha, success! All users is now in the list. You notice though that the icon has the little arrow on it

(like the shortcut icon). It opens ok and you see the desktop icon. But when you double-click it you get an “access denied” error! It’s the same for all the

system icons.

To cut a long story

short, Server 2008 and Vista have changed the “All Users” location. If you navigate your way back to C:\Users, a folder called Public is visible (also a

hidden folder by default). In here you will now find the location to drop common user icons.

style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">As mentioned, C:\Users\All Users\Desktop is there, but it’s marked as a “protected operating

system file” and is a shortcut.  Perhaps something to do with the security virtualization?

The vulnerability disclosed yesterday affects Internet Explorer users whose computers run the Windows XP or Windows Server

2003 operating software.

It can allow hackers to remotely take control of victims’ machines. The victims don’t need to do anything to get

infected except visit a website that’s been hacked.

Security experts say criminals have been attacking the vulnerability for nearly a week.

Thousands of sites have been hacked to serve up malicious software that exploits the vulnerability. People are drawn to these sites by clicking a link in

spam email.

The so-called “zero day” vulnerability disclosed by Microsoft affects a part of its software used to play

video.

The problem arises from the way the software interacts with Internet Explorer, which opens a hole for hackers to tunnel

into.

Microsoft urged vulnerable users to disable the problematic part of its software, which can be done from Microsoft’s support website,

while the company works on a “patch” – or software fix – for the problem.
